Same Toward Friend, Foe

Vijnana Bhairava 125

Meaning · English

Be the same toward an enemy and a friend, the same in honour and in insult. Knowing this, because Brahman is whole and complete, you would be at ease.

Three words carry it. Sama means level, even, the same on both sides, like a surface with no slope. Paripurnatva is fullness: paripurna is completely filled, with nothing left over to be added. Brahman is the wide, whole reality the verse is pointing at. Sukhi means at ease, from sukha, a good space, room to move in. The clauses run in order. Toward a foe and toward a friend, level. In being honoured and in being scorned, level. Then the reason: Brahman is complete, so nothing in it is missing, and nothing arriving can add to it or take from it. Knowing that, you rest at ease. The doorway is the ordinary moment of praise or insult, opened from inside. Each one pulls toward a side, and the text's logic is that the pull has nothing to hold if the one receiving is already full. Shivopadhyaya's commentary is not quoted here, since it is not before us.

1. Sit comfortably, or stay wherever you are when a slight or a compliment lands. 2. Bring to mind one person you count as a friend and one you count as a foe. Notice where each sits in the body. 3. Recall a moment of being praised and one of being insulted. Let each be as it was, without arguing with it. 4. Rest on the thought that Brahman is whole and complete, and that nothing arriving adds to it or takes from it. 5. When the mind picks a side, notice it and come back to the level ground. 6. Stop when the four feel even, or after ten minutes.

The tradition's account: the mind moves because it feels a lack, so it reaches for the friend and the praise and pushes away the foe and the insult. When the fullness of Brahman is known, the reaching has no support and drops. What is left is awareness resting in itself, level on every side. What a sitter tends to notice: the knowing does not arrive by force. Called up on purpose, a memory of someone who slighted you brings a tightening, often in the jaw, throat or belly, and a story forms quickly. The first difficulty is mistaking evenness for numbness, a flat pretending not to care. The small sign it is working is that the sting is seen as a sting, with the story a half-beat late. Attention stops chasing the person and notices the one who is hurt or flattered. The usual way it goes wrong is turning it into a rule of behaviour, or a verdict that you should not feel anything.
