The Middle of Likes

Vijnana Bhairava 126

Meaning · English

Hold on to no hatred anywhere. Hold on to no craving anywhere. When both liking and disliking are released, in the middle the vastness glides forward.

Three words carry it. Dveṣa is aversion, the push away, from a root meaning to hate. Rāga is attachment, the pull toward, and its root means to colour or dye: a thing gets stained with wanting. Brahma comes from a root meaning to grow or swell, so it names the vast, not a person or a place. Bhāvayet means to cultivate or keep turning over, so the first two clauses do not forbid a reaction arising. They say do not nurture it, anywhere, at any time. Then the third clause: when pull and push are both let go, something is left between them. That middle is where the vastness prasarpati, creeps or glides forward, like something moving into open ground. Nothing is made or reached. It advances into the space the two leanings were filling. The doorway is ordinary. Every moment of seeing a face, hearing a word or tasting food arrives first and is stained afterward by like or dislike. By the text's own logic, the moment can be opened from inside by catching the stain before it sets, and the middle is already there.

1. Sit, stand or stay wherever you are. Let your eyes rest and let things come as they come. 2. Wait for the first small leaning: a sound you like, a thought you dislike, an itch. 3. Do not feed it. Do not argue with it or chase it. Let it stay as it is. 4. Notice the space between the pull and the push. Rest your attention there. 5. When the mind wanders into a story, come back to that space. 6. Stop when the time you set is over.

The tradition's account is that the mind moves by swinging between wanting and refusing. Take away both, and the swinging stops. The support the mind leaned on drops away, and awareness is left knowing itself. The text calls this vastness and says it moves into the middle on its own. What a sitter tends to notice is plainer. First, how fast the leaning comes: a sound is already irritating before you have heard it. Attention keeps sliding to the story about the thing, and the gap is easy to miss. Small signs it is working: a reaction starts and you see it starting, and it thins out without being fought. A flat moment may follow, neither pleasant nor unpleasant, and it can feel like nothing. The usual ways it goes wrong are forcing indifference, which is only another refusal, or hunting for the vastness and so wanting it. Wanting the middle is still rāga.
