Meaning · English
What cannot be known, what cannot be taken hold of, what is empty, what has gone into absence: all of it is to be held as Bhairava. At the end of that, awareness comes.
Four things are named: what can't be known, what can't be grasped, what is empty, what has slipped into absence. Each is a place where the mind finds nothing to stand on. Avedya means that which cannot be made an object of knowing. Agrahya means that which the mind cannot take hold of. Shunya is the void, the blank. Abhavaga is what has gone over into abhava, non-being, the sense that something is simply not there. Bhairava is the name for the ultimate reality, and bhavya means to be contemplated, brought into being in the mind as something real. So the instruction is plain: whatever you meet that is unknowable, ungraspable, empty or absent, treat it as Bhairava. Do not push it away as a failure of thought. The last clause says that at the end of this, bodha, awareness, comes to be. The reasoning is that the ordinary moment already contains these gaps: the thought that fails to land, the blank between two thoughts, the sense that something is missing. Usually the mind flinches from them and reaches for the next object. Here the gap itself is taken as the doorway, opened from inside the moment you are already in.
1. Sit or stand wherever you are, eyes open or closed, and let the body settle. 2. Wait for a place where the mind finds nothing: a thought that won't resolve, a blank between thoughts, a feeling that something is missing. 3. Do not fill it. Do not name it or picture it. Treat what you find there as Bhairava, and stay with it. 4. When the mind reaches for a plan, a memory or a picture of emptiness, notice the reach and come back to the gap. 5. Stay until the end of the sit. Leave any awareness that comes after the gap as it is, without grasping it.
The tradition's account: the mind lives by grasping objects. When it meets what cannot be known or held, its movement has nothing to feed on and falls quiet. The support drops away, and what is left is awareness knowing itself, which the text calls Bhairava. Nothing is added. The mind simply stops reaching past the gap. What a sitter tends to notice is less tidy. At first the blank feels like boredom or a small alarm, and attention jumps to a plan or a memory. Trying to grasp the emptiness is the commonest slip: the mind makes a picture of nothing and holds that instead. A small sign it is working is a gap that lasts a little longer without being filled, and a sense of being awake in it rather than dull. Another is that the flinch becomes visible before it acts. It also goes wrong when emptiness is taken as a numb, sleepy blank. Awareness stays alert there, and that is how the two are told apart.
