Meaning · English
When the thoughts "I," "mine," "this" and the like come up, the mind moves into what has no support. Urged on by meditating on that, one becomes still.
The verse names three small thoughts: "I," "mine," "this." They are the ordinary labels the mind sticks on everything, as in "I am tired," "my phone," "this room." The text calls their arrival a prasanga, an occasion or opening. Nothing has to be pushed away first. The thought itself is where the doorway sits. Nirādhāra is the supportless: nir means without, ādhāra means a base, a prop, something to stand on. When the mind looks at what "I" or "mine" actually rests on, it finds no ground to hold. The mind moves into that gap. Shamī means one who has become calm. The calm comes from the meditating on that supportless place, which gives an urge, a push, to stay there. It does not come from suppressing thought. Bhairava's logic is that the ordinary moment already contains the opening. The same thought that ties you to a body, a possession and an object is the thought you can follow back until it has nothing under it. Nothing is added from outside. A familiar moment is opened from inside.
1. Sit comfortably, eyes open or closed, and let your thoughts run as they do. 2. Wait for one that carries "I," "mine" or "this": "my back hurts," "this is taking long." 3. When you catch one, stay with it and ask what it rests on. Do not answer in words. 4. Let the thought stand without anything under it, and keep your attention in that gap for as long as it lasts. 5. When the mind wanders off, wait for the next "I," "mine" or "this" and do the same. 6. Stop when the sit feels finished, or after about ten minutes.
The tradition's account: the mind's movement is a reaching from one support to the next. "I," "mine" and "this" are the most common supports. When the mind goes into the supportless, the reaching stops. Awareness is left knowing itself, with nothing to lean on. Calm follows from the movement ending. What a sitter tends to notice: at first the thoughts come too fast to catch, and catching one feels like grabbing smoke. Then one is caught, and for a moment it has nothing behind it. It is a short gap, easy to miss. The usual mistakes are turning the search into an argument about who the "I" really is, or holding the gap tight so it turns into a blank. Small signs it is working: a thought loosens as soon as it is looked at, and the space after it feels plain rather than empty. Some days the gap does not come at all. Attention is simply on the thought, and that is still the practice.
