Words Held to Meaning
Vijnana Bhairava 132
Meaning · English
Constant, reaching everywhere, resting on nothing, pervading all, lord of everything: take these words in at every moment and stay with what each one means. The one who does this has what was sought.
The verse gives five words and says what to do with them. Nitya means constant, what does not come and go. Vibhu means all-reaching, not confined to one place. Niradhara is made of nir (without) and adhara (support, something to rest on). It names what stands on nothing and needs nothing under it. Vyapaka means pervading, filling through. Akhiladhipa means lord of the whole, the one everything depends on while it depends on nothing. Then the instruction: dhyayan, to dwell on these words, pratikshanam, at every moment, arthanurupatah, in keeping with their meaning. So the words are not to be chanted as sound. Each is held with the thing it points to. The one who does this is kritartha, someone whose task is done and who has what was sought. The logic is that the ordinary moment is already full of this. Every passing thought, sight and sound happens inside what is constant and unsupported. Dwelling on the words, moment after moment, turns the mind toward that instead of toward the passing item.
1. Sit or stand somewhere you will not be called away, with your eyes open or closed as is easy. 2. Say one word silently: constant. Let it point at what it names, not at the sound. 3. Move on to the others in turn: all-reaching, resting on nothing, pervading, lord of everything. Give each as long as it holds its meaning. 4. When the word goes flat or a picture takes its place, return to the word and what it points to. 5. Carry one of the words into the day and let it come back at odd moments. 6. Stop when the words quiet down on their own, or when the time you set is up.
The tradition's account: these words name what has no support. A mind that follows their meaning has nothing to lean on, so its running from object to object slows and stops. When the movement stops, the support drops away and awareness is left knowing itself. That is the text's teaching, and the words are only the way in. What a sitter tends to notice is plainer. At first the words go flat after a few repeats and become mere sound. Or the mind turns each one into a picture, a big sky or a bright field, and holds the picture instead. Both are the usual slips. A small sign that it is working is a moment when the word is not being said and its meaning is still there, with a faint sense of not leaning on anything. It also goes wrong when the sitter strains to produce that sense. The body needs nothing special. A steady, unforced seat is enough, and the attention does the work.
