The Conjuror's Net
Vijnana Bhairava 133
Meaning · English
All this stands without any ground of its own, like a conjuror's net. What is the substance of a conjuror's net? Holding to this question firmly, a person comes to stillness.
Three words carry the verse. Tattva is "that-ness": what a thing is in itself, its real substance. Put an "a" in front and you get atattva, without that-ness. Indrajala is a conjuror's net: jala is a net or web, and the word names the trick of making things appear that are not there. Shama is quieting, the settling of something that was stirred. The verse says that everything standing before you, the whole display, has no substance of its own, the way a conjuror's trick has none. Then it asks a question: what is the substance of that net? The question has no object to land on. The trick looks solid, yet there is nothing under it to point at. Holding that question firmly, with steadiness, a person goes to stillness. This works as a doorway because nothing has to be removed or improved. The ordinary moment, the room, the person across from you, the worry, is itself the thing questioned. Bhairava's answer is that the moment, looked into from inside, shows no ground, and the grasping that kept it solid has nothing left to hold.
1. Sit or stand wherever you are, with your eyes open or softly closed, and let your body settle. 2. Look at whatever is in front of you, a wall, a face, a thought, a worry, and take it as a conjuror's net. 3. Ask quietly: what is the substance of this? Ask it once, then wait without answering. 4. When a thought answers, ask the question again of that thought. 5. When the mind wanders, notice it and ask again of whatever it wandered to. 6. Stop when the asking has gone quiet, or when the time you set is over.
The tradition's account runs like this. The mind moves by taking hold of things as real and standing on them. Ask what the substance of a thing is, and the mind looks for a support and finds none. The grasping stops, the supports drop away, and what remains is awareness knowing itself, still. What a sitter tends to notice is plainer. At first the question turns into a word game, and the mind answers it with more thoughts. Or it goes flat and the room looks dull, as if nothing were there, which is not the same as seeing there is no ground. A small sign it is working is a pause after the question, a moment where the search finds nothing and does not rush to fill the gap. Things may look the same but be held more loosely. The usual wrong turns are forcing the pause, deciding the answer in advance, or using the question to push away what is unpleasant. The body needs no special shape, only enough ease to stay with the question.
