Nothing Changes, Nothing Acts
Vijnana Bhairava 134
Meaning · English
For the self that does not change, where is knowing, where is doing? Outer things exist only because knowing holds them up. So this whole world is empty.
Three words carry it. Nirvikara means without alteration: the self never turns into something else. Jnana is knowing, the act of taking something in as an object. Kriya is doing, the act of making something happen. Shunya is empty, with nothing of its own inside. Now the clauses. A self that never changes has no room for knowing as a happening, and none for doing as a happening, so both are asked about and neither is found. Next: every outer thing, every bhava, depends on knowing. A tree, a wall, a worry is there for you only as it is known. Take the knowing away and no outer thing stands alone. So the whole world is empty, held up by nothing but knowing. This works as a doorway because the ordinary moment is the opening. Whatever you see or think right now is already resting on knowing, so you do not have to go anywhere to test it. Look at what is in front of you from inside, and the support shows. Shivopadhyaya's commentary is not quoted here, and nothing is attributed to him.
1. Sit or stand where you are, eyes open or softly closed, and let whatever is in front of you stay as it is. 2. Pick one thing you notice: a sound, the floor, a thought. 3. Ask where it is without being known. Stay with the answer, not with words about it. 4. Turn to the next thing that arrives and ask the same. 5. When the mind wanders into a story, notice that the story was also known, and return. 6. Stop when the questions go quiet or the time is up.
The tradition's account: the mind's movement is what makes knowing and doing seem like events. When that movement stops, the support under outer things drops away, and awareness is left knowing itself, unchanged. The text teaches this as the nature of the self, not as a state you produce. What a sitter tends to notice is plainer. At first the mind turns the idea into a thought about emptiness, and that thought is just another object. Attention keeps reaching for things: a sound, an itch, a plan. The small sign it is working is catching that each of these arrives already known, and that the knowing itself has no edge or shape. Sometimes the room looks thinner, less solid, for a moment. The usual mistakes are making the world feel unreal by force, going numb, or waiting for a special state. Another is treating emptiness as a belief to hold. The verse points at dependence on knowing, which can be checked again and again.
