Bondage Is a Reflection
Vijnana Bhairava 135
Meaning · English
I have no bondage and no release. These are scares meant for the frightened. All of this is a reflection in the mind, as the sun appears in many waters.
Three words carry it. Bandha is bondage, from a root meaning to tie. Moksha is release, from a root meaning to let go. Pratibimba is reflection: bimba is a disc, prati is back, so a disc thrown back. Buddhi is the mind that knows and judges, from a root meaning to wake. Now the clauses. Bhairava says he has no bondage and no release. Both words belong together: you can only be released from what ties you, so if nothing ties, release has no work to do. He calls them scares, things said to the frightened, and a frightened person is the one who needs them. Then comes the image. The world is a reflection in the mind, as the sun shows in water. There is one sun, and it is not wet, divided or moved by the water. Many pools show many suns, and ripples shake the image without touching what is above. This works as a doorway because the reflection is always there. Any ordinary moment, such as a worry or a sense of being stuck, is a picture in the mind. Seen as a picture, it stops looking like a rope.
1. Sit where you will not be moved for ten minutes, and let your eyes rest half open or closed. 2. Let one worry or one sense of being stuck come up. Do not push it. 3. Look at it as a reflection in water: a picture shown in the mind, with the mind as the surface. 4. Notice what is looking. The sun is not wet by the pool. 5. When the mind starts arguing about being bound or free, drop the argument and go back to looking. 6. Stop when the ten minutes are over, and let the picture go.
The tradition's account: bondage and release are both movements of the mind, ideas of being tied and of being freed. When the mind sees them as reflections, the movement stops. The support they leaned on drops away, and awareness is left knowing itself, like the sun, which was never in the water. A sitter tends to find this harder and plainer than it sounds. First the mind argues, trying to decide whether it is bound. Then it hunts for a freed state to stand in, which is only the other scare. The small sign that it is working is a gap: a worry still shows, but it looks like an image with edges, and the one watching it is not inside it. Attention feels wider and less gripped. The usual mistakes are turning the idea into a belief to repeat, pushing the worry away as unreal, or waiting for a special state. A reflection is not unreal; it is simply not the sun. Nothing needs to be removed.
