Meaning · English

Slain, you will attain the celestial abodes; victorious, you will enjoy the kingdom on earth. Therefore arise, son of Kunti, for the fight, with a settled determination.

Krishna lays two outcomes before Arjuna and says neither is a loss. Swarga means the celestial abodes, the heavens a warrior is said to reach after falling in battle. Mahi means the earth, here the kingdom and its enjoyment. Fall, and the heavens; win, and the earth. Then comes the turn: uttishtha, arise, stand up. Arjuna has been sitting down, bow dropped, and the word is physical. The last word, kritanishchaya, joins krita, made, with nishchaya, a settled decision. It means a resolve already made firm, not a mood of courage. Krishna gives the reason just before this: Arjuna fears disgrace and death, and here he shows that death costs him nothing and victory gives him much, so only the hesitation is a real loss. He asks Arjuna to get up and act from a decision made once. Shankara reads this as Krishna still speaking on the ordinary ground of duty and reward, before he turns to knowledge of the Self. Ramanuja takes it as preparing Arjuna to fight as his duty. Madhva reads the fight as service offered to the Lord, not as a bargain for either reward.

A child stands at the edge of a cold pool, toes curled over the tile, shivering and arguing with herself. The water is no kinder after ten minutes of waiting; only the shivering has grown. Arjuna's hesitation is that edge. Both outcomes are the water, and the standing still is what costs.

1. Pick one task you have been putting off because both results make you uneasy, such as a hard phone call or a conversation you owe someone. 2. Sit for two minutes and write down the worst result and the best result. Then ask whether you could live with either. 3. Decide a time today, say 5 p.m., and say it aloud once. 4. When the time comes, stand up first, before you think again, and begin. Notice whether the dread was heavier before starting than after.

A farmer stands at the edge of his field at dawn, a bag of seed at his feet. The sky might rain tomorrow, or it might not. He has gone back and forth for three days, and the sowing window is closing. Krishna's words to Arjuna would change that moment in steps. First, the farmer names the two outcomes plainly: rain comes and the seed takes, or it fails and he sows again next season, poorer but alive and working. Second, he sees that the third outcome, an unsown field, is the one he is actually choosing by waiting. Third, he settles the decision once, aloud, and does not reopen it. Fourth, he picks up the bag. Ordinary experience bears out that long dithering wears a person down more than the task itself does. The verse does not promise the rain, and it does not say the loss will be painless if it comes. It also does not ask anyone to push on against real danger or ill health where a doctor or a wiser head should be consulted first.
