The Yoga of Action
Yoga Sutras 2.1
Meaning · English
Burning discipline, study of one's own self, and handing one's work over to the Lord: these three together are the yoga of action.
Three key words. Tapas comes from a root meaning heat. It is the discipline that burns, the steady choice of effort over ease. Svadhyaya joins sva, one's own, with adhyaya, going into. It is study, and the study turns back on oneself. Ishvara-pranidhana means placing one's work down before Ishvara, the Lord. Kriya means action, so kriya-yoga is yoga carried out in deeds. The plain sense: Patanjali names three practices and calls them together the yoga of action. Discipline gives strength. Study gives sight. Offering the work gives freedom from clutching at its result. Why he says it: the first chapter described the mind held still, and its means were practice and letting go. That suits a mind already steady. This chapter begins with practice for a mind that is not yet steady, and gives it work to do. The next verses say what the work is for. Vyasa's Bhashya, the oldest commentary, takes tapas as bearing the pairs of opposites, such as heat and cold. He takes study as reading texts on liberation or repeating the sacred syllable, and surrender as offering all actions to the Lord. The later commentators generally keep his reading.
A farmer ploughs his field before the rains. He knows his soil and which seed suits it. Once the seed is in, he cannot make the clouds gather, so he leaves the harvest to the sky. Ploughing is discipline, knowing the soil is study, and leaving the rain alone is the offering.
1. Pick one small discipline for this week, such as ten minutes each morning sitting quietly with your phone in another room. Stay for the full time, even when restless. 2. Once a day, read a single page of a text you respect, slowly. Ask what it says about your own habits. 3. In the evening, name one task you did today. Say aloud that you offer its result away, then notice whether your grip on the outcome loosens or stays.
