Two Aims of Practice
Yoga Sutras 2.2
Meaning · English
The practices are for two purposes: to bring absorption into being, and to make the afflictions thin.
Three words carry the sutra. Samadhi is absorption: sam, together, and dhi, the mind's holding, so a mind gathered into one. Bhavana is a bringing into being, a cultivating, the way a gardener raises a plant rather than finding it. Klesha is an affliction, from a root meaning to torment or trouble. Tanu is thin, and karana is making, so tanukarana is making thin. The sutra says the practices just named are for two things. One is to cultivate samadhi. The other is to thin the kleshas. Every word is accounted for, and the sutra says thin, not remove. Patanjali gives this because a student who has just been handed a method asks what it is for. Sutra 2.1 named the practices, and this one names their purpose. The two aims are linked. Afflictions that press less leave the mind freer to gather, and a gathered mind loosens their hold further. Vyasa, in the Bhashya, takes the practice to bring samadhi into being and to make the afflictions thin. The commentators who follow him do not differ in any way that changes the sense here.
A heavy curtain over a window keeps the room dim, though the sun is up outside. Swap it for thin cloth and the same daylight comes through. The curtain stands for the afflictions, and the thinning is the practice. The light is the steadiness of mind that was always there to be seen.
1. Choose one ordinary moment today, such as waiting for a kettle or walking to a bus stop, and give it two minutes of undivided attention to one thing, like the sound of the water or your steps. 2. Later, note one moment when irritation, pride or fear pulled at you. Just name it silently and watch how strong it was. 3. This evening, write one line on whether that pull felt thick or thin compared with a week ago. Do this for a week.
