Spare What We Love
Shvetashvatara Upanishad 4.22
Meaning · English
Rudra, do not harm our children, grandchildren, or our lives, our cattle or horses. Do not strike our brave ones in anger. With offerings, we call on you always.
The prayer asks Rudra to leave untouched everything a household depends on: its young, its next generation, its own span of years, and the animals that feed and carry it. Rudra is the fierce face of the one power the seer has been describing, the one who can destroy. The worry is his anger turning on the strong men who guard the home. The people praying come carrying offerings, and they keep calling to him, again and again.
Picture a wood stove in a farmhouse kitchen. It cooks the meals and keeps the children warm, and the same fire could take the whole house. So someone feeds it carefully and checks it before bed. The prayer treats Rudra that way: one power that both sustains the household and could destroy it, approached with care and steady offerings.
