Shelter in the Unborn
Shvetashvatara Upanishad 4.21
Meaning · English
Knowing you are the Unborn, someone who is afraid comes to you for shelter. Rudra, with that kind face of yours, keep me safe always.
The prayer starts from one fact: the One was never born. What was never born cannot die or be taken away. So a person who is afraid of loss, of death, of the dark, turns there for shelter. Rudra is the name used, a name that can sound fierce. The prayer asks for his right-hand face, the side that is favourable and kind. And it asks to be kept safe always, not only through one bad night.
A big sheepdog barks hard at the fence when strangers pass, then lies down quietly beside the toddler who crawls up to it. It is the same animal with two faces. The frightened person is asking for the side of the One that turns toward them, and asking for it to stay turned that way.
