Known by the Heart
Shvetashvatara Upanishad 4.20
Meaning · English
His form does not stand where sight can reach; no eye has ever seen him. Those who know him through heart and mind, as the one living in the heart, become deathless.
The one behind everything has no shape that could stand in front of anyone to be looked at. So no one, however sharp their eyes, finds him by looking outward. He is found another way. He already lives in the heart, and the heart and mind together are what recognize him there. Those who come to know him like this, from the inside, are said to pass beyond death. Knowing, not seeing, is the means. Freedom from death is the result the text names.
No mirror shows you your own heartbeat, and no camera catches it. Yet press a palm flat to your chest in a quiet room and there it is, steady, never missing. Looking was the wrong tool. Feeling from inside was the right one. What dwells in the heart is met that way, not stared at.
