No Image Can Hold
Shvetashvatara Upanishad 4.19
Meaning · English
No one has seized him from above, from the sides, or in the middle. Nothing resembles him, the one whose name is great renown.
Three directions are tried: above, across, and the middle. These are the places a hand or an eye might reach. From none of them has anyone caught hold of him. Then comes the plain statement that no likeness of him exists: no picture, no copy, no measure that matches him. That does not leave him obscure. His name carries great fame and is spoken everywhere. He is widely known by name, yet he cannot be held from any side or fixed in any form.
Stand inside an empty room. You can touch the ceiling, press the side walls, step into the middle of the floor. Every surface meets your hand, yet the space itself never does, and no drawing captures it. Still, people use that space every day. He is like that space: present, named, relied on, never gripped.
