Before Day and Night
Shvetashvatara Upanishad 4.18
Meaning · English
With no darkness, no day or night, no being or non-being, only the Gracious One remained. That undying one is the sun's longed-for light; from it, ancient wisdom flowed.
Take away darkness and day and night go with it, because each is only measured against the other. Being and non-being work the same way. When every such pair falls away, what is left is the gracious one, by itself. It is called the undying, the thing that does not wear down. It is also the light within the sun that worshippers long for. And the ancient wisdom, knowing itself, first flowed out from it.
Before anyone draws on a sheet of paper, there is no shape and no background, no inside and no outside, just the blank page. Every line drawn later splits it into this and that, yet the page came first and stays under every line. The gracious one is that page; day and night, being and non-being, are the drawings.
