The Maker Seated Within

Shvetashvatara Upanishad 4.17

Meaning · English

This god, maker of all things, the great self, is always settled in people's hearts. Grasped through heart, insight and mind, those who know this become deathless.

The one who makes everything, the great self behind the whole world, is not somewhere far off. It is always settled inside people, in the heart. It comes into view when three things work together: the heart's feeling, clear insight, and the thinking mind. None of them is enough alone. What knowing it brings is stated plainly: those who truly know this are no longer bound by death.

A pilot light sits inside a gas water heater, always burning, even when no hot water runs. You only see it by kneeling, opening the small panel, and looking closely. The maker of everything sits in the heart the same way: already lit, noticed only when feeling, insight and thought turn together to look.
