Finer Than Ghee
Shvetashvatara Upanishad 4.16
Meaning · English
Subtler than ghee, like the thin film that forms on it, the gracious one lies concealed in all beings. Knowing the one god who encircles the world, a person is freed from every bond.
Ghee is butter cooked until it turns clear, and a fine layer gathers at its surface, the most delicate part of all. The god described is finer still. He is called gracious, a word that also means kind and auspicious. He sits inside every creature, too fine to notice. He is also one, and he wraps around the whole universe. So he is within each thing and around all things at once. Knowing him this way frees a person from every bond that ties a life down.
Picture an empty glass jar standing on a kitchen shelf. Air fills the inside of the jar, and the same air surrounds it on every side. Nothing about the jar looks full. Each being is like that jar: the god is the unseen fullness inside it, and also the one presence surrounding the whole world.
