Severing Death's Snares
Shvetashvatara Upanishad 4.15
Meaning · English
He alone guards the world through time, master of all, concealed in every creature. Sages and gods are yoked to him; knowing him so, a person cuts death's snares.
The creator named just before is also the one who keeps the world going, age after age. He is its keeper and its master, yet he sits out of sight inside every living thing. The seers who know Brahman, the reality behind everything, are yoked to him, and so are the gods. Their power and insight hold together because of him. Death is pictured as a hunter laying ropes. Knowing this one as both ruler and hidden presence is what cuts those ropes through.
Think of the wiring inside the walls of a house. Nobody looks at it, yet every lamp, fan and fridge runs on it. It was there before the furniture came in, and it keeps working while people sleep. That is the keeper described: running the whole world, tucked out of view inside each thing in it.
