Hidden Within the Murk
Shvetashvatara Upanishad 4.14
Meaning · English
Finer than the finest, amid the murk, maker of all in countless forms, sole encircler of everything: knowing him as the gracious one, a person finds lasting peace.
Four things are said about one being. He is smaller than the smallest thing, too fine to be picked out like an object. He sits in the middle of the murk, the churned-up confusion of the world, not somewhere safely clear of it. He makes everything and takes many shapes. He alone wraps the whole of it round. The last line names what follows: whoever knows him as gracious, kindly toward all he holds, comes to a peace that does not run out.
Think of the air in a crowded, noisy room. You cannot see it or point to one piece of it, yet it fills every gap between the people and surrounds them all at once. That is how God is placed here: too fine to single out, right inside the clutter, and holding every part of it.
