Whom Our Offerings Reach

Shvetashvatara Upanishad 4.13

Meaning · English

He commands the gods. The worlds rest on him. He rules every creature on two legs and four. Which god, then, should receive our offering?

The question at the end is not doubt. It is pointed, and the first three lines already answer it. People bring offerings to many gods, each with a task. This one stands over all of them as their master. The worlds are held up by him, not by themselves. Every living thing that walks, on two feet or on four, people and cattle alike, is under his rule. So the offering, wherever it is poured, belongs to him.

A city apartment block has dozens of doors, each with its own nameplate, and people knock on whichever one they need. Under all of them sits one foundation slab that no tenant ever sees, carrying every floor. The gods are the doors people knock on; the one this verse asks about is the slab carrying the whole building.
