Prayer for a Clear Mind

Shvetashvatara Upanishad 4.12

Meaning · English

Source and birthplace of the gods, Rudra, master of all, the great seer who saw the Golden Womb being born: may he yoke us to clear, good understanding.

The gods are not where things begin. They arise from this one being and grow out of him. He is called Rudra, master of the whole world, and also a great seer, someone who sees. What he saw was the Golden Womb, the first-born seed of creation, at the moment it was born. The closing line is a prayer. It asks that he fasten the speakers to a clear and good understanding, the way a yoke joins two things so they move together.

Picture the oldest woman at a family gathering who held the great-grandfather on the day he was born. Everyone in the room comes from that baby, and she watched him arrive. Rudra stands the same way to the Golden Womb: present at its birth, and so older than everything, gods included, that came after it.
