Ruler of Knowing and Not-Knowing

Shvetashvatara Upanishad 5.1

Meaning · English

In Brahman, beyond all and without end, two things lie hidden: knowing and not-knowing. Not-knowing perishes; knowing does not die. Whoever rules over both is other than them.

Brahman is the name for the one reality under everything. Inside it, out of sight, sit two things. Not-knowing belongs with everything that wears out and comes to an end. Knowing belongs with what does not die. That much sets up a simple pair, one passing and one lasting. Then comes the turn: whoever rules over both is neither of them. Even true knowledge is not the last word. It is held and directed by someone who stands apart from it.

Picture a theatre. Part of the stage is lit and part sits in shadow. Up in the booth, a technician at the lighting board decides what is bright and what is dark. The technician stands on neither the lit floor nor the shaded one. The one who rules knowing and not-knowing stands apart from both in the same way.
