Presiding Over Every Womb

Shvetashvatara Upanishad 5.2

Meaning · English

The One who stands over every womb, over all forms and every source, who at the start filled the first-born tawny seer with knowledge and watched him come to birth.

A womb here means any place something comes out of: a mother, a seed, the raw stuff a world is made from. The One stands over each of these, one by one, and over every shape they produce. Then the text points to the very start of things. A first seer appeared, tawny in colour, the earliest knower. This One stocked him with knowledge and saw him being born. So even the first mind that ever knew anything did not supply its own knowing. It was given, and it was seen.

Picture a head baker walking a long row of ovens, opening each door, checking every tin and every loaf. Before the bakery ever opened, she trained the first apprentice herself and stood beside him as his first loaf came out. The ovens are the sources, the loaves are the forms, and the apprentice is that first seer.
