The Net Cast and Gathered

Shvetashvatara Upanishad 5.3

Meaning · English

This god takes each net and spreads it out in many ways, then draws it back in this field. Making the lords again, the great Self rules everything.

Each net is one weave of the world: a kind of creature, a pattern of life, thrown wide into countless shapes. The field is this world where those shapes live. The same god who spreads them out later pulls them back in, and then does it again. Creation runs in rounds, not once. The lords are the powers set over parts of the world. They too are made, and remade, by him. Above every one of them stands a single great Self.

A street vendor at dawn unrolls a cloth and lays out hundreds of small goods, each in its place. At dusk the same hands fold everything back into one bundle, and tomorrow the stall opens again. The world's many forms are the goods. The hands that spread and gather them, day after day, belong to the one god.
