Light in Every Direction

Shvetashvatara Upanishad 5.4

Meaning · English

Just as the sun blazes, lighting every direction, above, below and across, so the one God, blessed and worth choosing, alone governs everything that comes from a source.

The sun lights what is overhead, what is underfoot, and what lies level with it, all at once. God's rule works the same way: nothing that has been born falls outside it. Three words describe this God. Blessed: full of glory. Worth choosing: the one most fit to be sought and wanted. Alone: no second ruler shares the work. Every being that comes from a source, each with its own nature, stands under that single God.

A single bulb hangs from the middle of a ceiling. Switch it on and the ceiling, the floor and all four walls light up together; no corner needs a bulb of its own. The one God stands over creatures that way: one source, reaching every being from where it is, missing none.
