The One Who Ripens

Shvetashvatara Upanishad 5.5

यच्च स्वभावं पचति विश्वयोनिः पाच्यांश्च सर्वान् परिणामयेद्यः । सर्वमेतद्विश्वमधितिष्ठत्येको गुणांश्च सर्वान्विनियोजयेद्यः

Meaning · English

Source of all, he ripens his own nature and brings to full growth everything that can ripen. Alone he oversees this whole universe and sets every quality to its work.

The One is the source everything comes from, and two kinds of work follow from that. First he ripens his own nature, letting what is in him come to full form. Then he keeps changing whatever is still unfinished, carrying each thing toward what it is able to become. None of this is left to run unattended. He alone stands over the whole universe. He also hands out the qualities things have, deciding which belongs where and putting each one to use.

Picture one cook at a crowded stove. Rice simmers in one pot, lentils in another, bread browns on the griddle, each moving at its own pace. The cook watches all of it, turns the heat, adds salt here and cumin there. That single cook stands for the One, bringing every thing to readiness and deciding which quality goes where.

सबका मूल वही अपने स्वभाव को परिपक्व करता है और जो कुछ पक सकता है, उसे पूर्ण विकास तक पहुँचाता है। वह अकेला इस पूरे विश्व की देखरेख करता है और हर गुण को उसके काम में लगाता है।

वह एक ही वह स्रोत है जिससे सब कुछ निकलता है, और उससे दो प्रकार के काम होते हैं। पहले वह अपने स्वभाव को परिपक्व करता है, ताकि जो उसमें है वह पूरा रूप ले सके। फिर जो कुछ अभी अधूरा है, उसे वह बदलता रहता है और हर वस्तु को उस ओर ले जाता है जो वह बन सकती है। इसमें से कुछ भी बिना देखरेख के अपने आप नहीं चलता। पूरे विश्व के ऊपर अकेला वही खड़ा है। वस्तुओं के गुण भी वही बाँटता है, तय करता है कि कौन-सा गुण कहाँ जाए, और हर एक को काम में लगाता है।

कल्पना कीजिए कि बर्तनों से भरे चूल्हे पर एक ही रसोइया है। एक पतीले में चावल धीमी आँच पर पक रहे हैं, दूसरे में दाल, तवे पर रोटी सिक रही है, और हर चीज़ अपनी गति से तैयार हो रही है। रसोइया सब पर नज़र रखता है, आँच घटाता-बढ़ाता है, कहीं नमक डालता है तो कहीं जीरा। वही अकेला रसोइया उस एक का प्रतीक है, जो हर वस्तु को तैयार अवस्था तक लाता है और तय करता है कि कौन-सा गुण कहाँ जाए।
