Secret at the Veda's Heart

Shvetashvatara Upanishad 5.6

Meaning · English

It lies concealed in the Upanishads, the secret core of the Veda. Brahma knows it as the source of the sacred word. The gods and seers of old who knew it became one with it and passed beyond death.

The one god described in the verses just before is not easy to find, even in scripture. It sits inside the Upanishads, which are already the hidden part of the Veda. It is a secret within a secret. Brahma, the creator figure, knows it as the place the sacred word comes from. The gods and seers of earlier ages knew it. Knowing it, they became formed of it, full of its nature. That change is what freed them from death.

Push an iron poker into a bed of hot coals and leave it there. After a while it glows the same orange as the fire and gives off heat of its own. Nothing was painted on. The iron took on the fire's nature. The old seers who knew the hidden one were changed the same way, from within.
