The Self That Wanders
Shvetashvatara Upanishad 5.7
गुणान्वयो यः फलकर्मकर्ता कृतस्य तस्यैव स चोपभोक्ता । स विश्वरूपस्त्रिगुणस्त्रिवर्त्मा प्राणाधिपः सञ्चरति स्वकर्मभिः
Meaning · English
Tied to the qualities, he acts for results and eats what his acts produce. Wearing every form, three-stranded, on three paths, lord of the breaths, he wanders by his deeds.
The subject now is the single living self. The qualities are the three strands that make up nature: clarity, restlessness and dullness. Once tangled in them, the self acts in order to get something, and what it gets comes back for it to live through. It takes on body after body, all shaped by those strands, and moves along three possible paths. It is lord of the breaths, the life-forces that keep a body going. Its own deeds steer where it goes next.
Picture a gardener who saves seed from this year's crop to plant next spring. Whatever he sowed decides what comes up. Whatever comes up supplies the next seed. The self works the same way. Each deed ripens into something it has to live through, and that living sets up the next round of acting and the next body.

गुणों से बँधा वह फल के लिए कर्म करता है और अपने कर्मों से उपजा फल भोगता है। हर रूप धारण किए, तीन गुणों वाला, तीन मार्गों पर चलता, प्राणों का स्वामी, वह अपने कर्मों के अनुसार भटकता है।
अब विषय एक जीवात्मा है। गुण वे तीन धागे हैं जिनसे प्रकृति बनी है: निर्मलता, चंचलता और जड़ता। उनमें एक बार उलझ जाने पर आत्मा कुछ पाने के लिए कर्म करती है, और जो उसे मिलता है वह लौटकर उसे ही भोगना पड़ता है। वह एक के बाद एक शरीर धारण करती है, जो सब उन्हीं गुणों से गढ़े होते हैं, और तीन संभव मार्गों पर चलती है। वह प्राणों की स्वामी है, उन जीवन-शक्तियों की जो शरीर को चलाए रखती हैं। उसके अपने कर्म ही तय करते हैं कि वह आगे कहाँ जाएगी।
एक माली की कल्पना कीजिए जो इस साल की फ़सल से बीज बचाकर अगले वसंत में बोता है। उसने जो बोया, वही तय करता है कि क्या उगेगा। जो उगता है, वही अगला बीज देता है। आत्मा भी इसी तरह चलती है। हर कर्म पककर कुछ ऐसा बन जाता है जिसे उसे भोगना पड़ता है, और वही भोग कर्म के अगले फेरे और अगले शरीर की नींव रखता है।
