Vaka the Demon

Mahabharata, Adi Parva 165

The story · English

Yudhishthira spoke to his mother, praising her for her compassion toward the suffering Brahmana. He expressed confidence that Bhima would return alive after slaying the cannibal, as their mother was always kind to Brahmanas. However, Yudhishthira cautioned her to tell the Brahmana to act discreetly. He wanted to ensure that the people of the town would not discover the truth of the matter, and he asked his mother to make the Brahmana promise to keep the request a secret.

When night passed, Bhima set out for the forest where the Rakshasa lived, carrying the food intended for the monster. As he approached the forest, Bhima began to eat the food himself and called out to the Rakshasa by name. This enraged the demon, who emerged from the woods. Vaka was a terrifying sight with a huge body, red eyes, a red beard, and red hair. His mouth stretched from ear to ear, his ears were straight as arrows, and his forehead was furrowed into three deep lines.

Vaka looked at Bhima eating his meal and asked who the fool was that desired to go to the abode of Yama by eating food intended for a demon. Bhima only smiled in derision and continued eating with his face turned away. Enraged by this disregard, the cannibal let out a frightful yell and ran at Bhima to kill him. Even then, Bhima cast only a single glance at the monster and continued his meal. Vaka struck Bhima heavily on the back with both arms, but Bhima did not even look up.

Vaka tore up a tree and hurled it at Bhima. By then, Bhima had finished the food and stood ready to fight. He caught the tree with his left hand. The two began a terrible combat, tearing up and hurling trees at one another until the surrounding region was completely devoid of trees. Vaka then identified himself by name and leaped upon Bhima, seizing him in his arms. The two struggled violently, dragging each other across the land until the earth trembled and the large trees standing there broke into pieces.

Seeing that Vaka was overcome with fatigue, Bhima pressed him down to the earth with his knees and struck him with great force. He placed one knee on the demon's back, seized his neck with his right hand and his waist cloth with his left, and bent him double. Vaka roared and vomited blood until he died. His terrified relatives emerged, and Bhima comforted them, warning them that if they continued to kill humans, they would die just as Vaka had. They promised to be peaceful toward mankind.

Bhima left the dead body at the town gate and went away unobserved. Vaka's kinsmen, seeing him slain, took fright and fled in different directions. Bhima returned to the Brahmana's house and told Yudhishthira all that had happened, in detail. The next morning, the citizens found the mangled body and were amazed by the superhuman feat. They asked the Brahmana who had saved them. To protect the Pandavas, the Brahmana claimed that a high-souled, mantra-skilled Brahmana had seen his distress and volunteered to carry the food. The people of the city were delighted and established a festival in which the worship of Brahmanas was the principal ceremony, to remember the one who relieved their fear.
