Draupadi Born of Fire
Mahabharata, Adi Parva 169
The story · English
King Drupada was a man overwhelmed by grief. He wandered through the asylums of the Brahmanas, searching for someone with the skill to grant him children who would surpass all others in accomplishment. His heart was heavy with despondency and he often spoke bitterly of his own relatives and the children he already had. More than anything, Drupada yearned for revenge against Drona. He had deliberated long and hard, but he realized that his own strength as a Kshatriya was not enough to overcome the discipline, training, and prowess of Drona. He spent his days walking along the banks of the Yamuna and the Ganga, hoping to find a way to defeat his enemy.
During his wanderings, the king found a sacred asylum where the Brahmanas lived by rigid vows and were of the highest virtue. There he met two sages named Yaja and Upayaja, brothers of the race of Kasyapa who were masters of the ancient institutes. Drupada focused his efforts on the younger brother, Upayaja. He courted him in private with sweet words and offered him every desirable acquisition a human could want. Drupada eventually made a direct request. He told Upayaja that if the sage would perform the sacrificial rites necessary to give him a son capable of slaying Drona, he would give him ten thousand cows or whatever else the Brahmana desired.
Upayaja told the king that he could not perform such rites. However, Drupada did not accept this as a final answer and continued to serve and pay homage to the sage for a full year. Finally, Upayaja spoke to him in a sweet tone and revealed a secret about his elder brother, Yaja. He told the king that he had once seen Yaja pick up a fruit from a spot without caring if it was pure, and that when Yaja lived in his teacher's house, he used to eat the remnants of other people's feasts. Upayaja believed that his brother coveted earthy acquisitions and lacked certain scruples. He advised Drupada to go to Yaja, for Yaja would be willing to perform the spiritual offices for him.
Though Drupada now held a low opinion of Yaja, he went to the sage's abode and worshipped him. He offered eighty thousand cows if Yaja would help him cool the fire of enmity burning in his heart. Drupada explained that Drona, a son of Bharadwaja, was a formidable archer who had overcome him in a contest. Drona lived as a Brahmana but possessed the might of a warrior, and his six-cubit bow was capable of slaying any living being. Drupada argued that while Drona combined Brahma force with Kshatriya might, Yaja's pure Brahma force was superior. He begged Yaja to perform the sacrifice for a son who would be invincible in battle.
Yaja agreed to the request and began to plan the grave ceremony, asking the assistance of Upayaja, who did not covet rewards. Upayaja detailed everything required for the grand sacrifice by fire. He assured King Drupada that a child would be born to him endowed with great prowess, energy, and strength. Drupada immediately began the necessary preparations. When the time came, Yaja poured libations of clarified butter into the sacrificial fire and called for the queen, the daughter-in-law of Prishata. He told her that a son and a daughter had arrived for her. The queen hesitated, saying her mouth was still filled with saffron and perfumed things, her body bore sweet scents, and she needed a moment to prepare herself.
Yaja told the queen that she could wait if she wished, but the sacrifice would be accomplished regardless because the oblation was already sanctified. He poured the final libation into the fire. Suddenly, from the flames arose a child who looked like a celestial. He possessed the effulgence of fire and was a terrible sight to behold. He wore a crown and excellent armour, carrying a sword, bow, and arrows. The boy let out loud roars and immediately ascended a chariot, riding about while the people of Panchala shouted in joy. An invisible voice from the sky declared that this prince was born to destroy Drona and remove the king's sorrow.
After this, a daughter emerged from the center of the sacrificial platform. She was called Panchali and was exceedingly beautiful, with dark skin, blue curly locks, and large eyes like lotus petals. Her fragrance was so strong it could be smelled from two miles away. As she appeared, another incorporeal voice spoke. It said that this dark-complexioned girl would be the first of all women and the cause of the destruction of many Kshatriyas. The voice added that she would accomplish the purpose of the gods and that many dangers would overtake the Kauravas because of her. The Panchalas roared like lions in their excitement.
The queen approached Yaja and asked that the children know no mother but her, and Yaja granted the wish. The Brahmanas named the son Dhrishtadyumna, because of his audacity and the fact that he was born with natural armor and weapons. The daughter was named Krishna because of her dark complexion. Later, the great Drona brought the prince Dhrishtadyumna into his own home. In exchange for the half of the kingdom he had previously taken from Drupada, Drona taught the prince the use of all weapons. Drona did this because he regarded destiny as inevitable and wished to perpetuate his own great deeds.
