The Swayamvara of Draupadi

Mahabharata, Adi Parva 189

The story · English

After many great kings had failed to string the massive bow, Arjuna rose from among the group of Brahmanas. As he stepped forward, the Brahmanas reacted with a mixture of pleasure and anxiety. Some were worried that a young man dressed as a priest, unpracticed in the arts of war, was attempting a feat that seasoned warriors like Salya could not achieve. They feared that if he failed, the entire community of Brahmanas would be mocked by the gathered monarchs. They urged him to stop, believing his attempt was born of childish vanity or mere unsteadiness. However, others disagreed, replying that they would not be made ridiculous or incur anyone's disrespect, and that this youth possessed the necessary strength.

Those who supported Arjuna pointed to his physical build, noting that his shoulders and arms were as powerful as a mighty elephant and his resolve as steady as the Himalayas. They reminded the others that Brahmanas are capable of achieving anything in the three worlds through their spiritual energy and discipline, citing examples like Rama the son of Jamadagni, who defeated all the Kshatriyas in battle, and Agastya, who drank the ocean. They argued that one should never underestimate a Brahmana, regardless of whether the task is great or small. Many said, 'So be it,' and the Brahmanas went on talking among themselves. Then the youth approached the bow and stood there like a mountain, preparing himself for the challenge before him.

Arjuna walked around the bow and bowed his head in reverence to the lord Isana, remembering Krishna as well. He then took up the weapon. While kings like Rukma, Sunitha, Vakra, Duryodhana, and Salya had strained with all their might and failed, Arjuna strung the bow in the twinkling of an eye. With effortless precision, he took five arrows and shot the mark, sending it falling through the opening in the machine above. The amphitheater erupted in a loud clamour and the heavens rained celestial flowers upon him. The Brahmanas waved their garments in joy, while the unsuccessful monarchs watched in grief and despair as musicians and bards began to sing the hero's praises.

King Drupada was filled with joy at the sight of the victory and desired to assist the hero with his forces if the occasion arose. Amidst the height of the celebration, Yudhishthira and the twins hastily left the amphitheater to return to their temporary home. Draupadi, also called Krishna, observing the scene and seeing Arjuna looking like Indra himself, approached the son of Kunti with a white robe and a garland of flowers. Having won Draupadi through his success in the trial, Arjuna was greeted with deep reverence by all the Brahmanas. He soon left the lists, followed by Draupadi, who had now become his wife.

However, the joy of the Brahmanas was met with sudden wrath from the invited monarchs. They were insulted that Drupada would bestow his daughter, the first of women, upon a Brahmana while treating the assembled kings as if they were straw. They accused Drupada of cutting down the tree just as it was about to bear fruit. The kings declared that Drupada deserved no respect and threatened to slay him and his son for this insult. They argued that Drupada had fed them excellent food only to disregard them in the end, failing to see a single monarch in the crowd who was his equal in status.

The angry kings reminded one another that according to Vedic declaration, a Swayamvara is intended for the Kshatriyas, and Brahmanas have no claim to a Kshatriya damsel. Some suggested that if Draupadi did not select one of them as her lord, they should cast her into the fire and return to their kingdoms. While they decided the Brahmana should not be killed because the wealth and lives of kings exist for the service of Brahmanas, they insisted that something must be done to prevent future Swayamvaras from ending in such a disgraceful manner. Then the monarchs, their arms like spiked iron maces, took up their weapons and rushed forward to kill Drupada.

Terrified by the sudden onslaught of bows and arrows, Drupada sought protection from the Brahmanas. However, Bhima and Arjuna stepped forward to oppose the charging kings, who rushed toward them like elephants in rut. As the monarchs attacked with gloved fingers and raised weapons, Bhima displayed his extraordinary strength. He tore a large tree from the earth and stripped it of its leaves, standing like the god Yama with a fierce mace. Arjuna, watching his brother's feat, shook off all fear and stood ready with his bow, prepared to receive the assailants and defend the group against the assembled monarchs.

Krishna, observing the scene, told his brother Halayudha that the hero with the bow was Arjuna and the man who had torn up the tree was Vrikodara, for no one else in the world could perform such a feat. He identified the humble youth who had left the amphitheater as the son of Dharma, Yudhishthira, and suspected the other two were the sons of the twin Aswins. Krishna said he had heard that the sons of Pandu and their mother Pritha had escaped the fire of the house of lac. Halayudha expressed great satisfaction at learning that his father's sister and the foremost of the Kaurava princes had survived.
