Meaning · English

Food eaten by one burning with grief, anger, hunger and the like does not digest either. Food in which the wholesome and the unwholesome are mixed is held to be samashana. Eating again on top of what has already been eaten, know that as adhyashana. Food eaten at the wrong time, too much or too little, is vishamashana. All three of these bring on death, or else terrible diseases.

Vagbhata first adds to his list of food that does not digest: food eaten while the mind is burning with grief, anger, hunger or something like them. Then he names three ways of eating that go wrong. The first, samashana, is eating wholesome and unwholesome food mixed together in one meal. The second, adhyashana, is eating again on top of a meal that is still there. The third, vishamashana, is eating at the wrong time, or eating too much, or too little. His verdict is stark: all three bring on death, or grave disease. The verse gives the result, not the reason. Ayurveda explains elsewhere that agni, the digestive fire, needs a settled mind, an emptied stomach and a steady rhythm. Strong feeling, a new load on half-digested food, and erratic timing or amounts each unsettle it. In this system's terms, poorly digested food is where illness begins. What it asks of a life is plain: come to the table calm, let one meal finish before the next, and keep regular hours and a fair portion.

1. Before your next meal, take three slow breaths. If you are upset or angry, take a ten-minute walk or simply wait, then eat. 2. Today, check whether your last meal still feels heavy. If it does, let the next one wait until you feel light and properly hungry, and skip the in-between snack. If you are diabetic, pregnant or told to eat regularly, keep your usual schedule. 3. Eat today's main meals at roughly the hours you kept yesterday, and stop at comfortable, neither stuffed nor half-fed.

Much of this matches what a good family doctor would say. Strong stress shifts the body away from its resting, digesting state, and many people notice that eating while upset brings discomfort or overeating. Heavy portions are linked to reflux and sluggishness, and very small or skipped meals can leave people weak or prone to bingeing later. Fairly regular mealtimes fit what is known about the body's daily clock. Constant grazing has no single verdict today; some people need frequent small meals for medical reasons. Agni maps loosely onto digestion and appetite. The idea that mixing wholesome with unwholesome food spoils a meal has no clear modern match; nutrition looks at the overall pattern of a diet. Death or grave illness from these habits is not supported as stated, though long-term eating patterns do shape health.
