One Syllable, Vast Story
Rama Raksha Stotram 1
Meaning · English
The story of Rama, lord of the Raghu line, runs to a hundred crore verses, and every single syllable of it destroys a person's gravest sins.
The hymn opens by setting a scale. Rama's story, told in full, runs to a hundred crore verses. That is a thousand million, a number meant to sound beyond counting. Then the verse turns that size around. Nobody needs the whole of it. One syllable, any one, is said to destroy a person's great sins, the heaviest wrongs a life can carry. The story is too long for anyone to finish, and its smallest piece already does the full work.
Take one spoonful of water from the sea and taste it. It is as salty as the whole ocean. Nobody has to drink the sea to know it is salt. The story is the ocean, too large for any one life to get through. Each syllable is that spoonful, carrying the full strength of the whole.
