Rama Pictured in the Mind
Rama Raksha Stotram 2
Meaning · English
Having meditated on Rama, dark as the blue lotus, his eyes like lotus petals, with Janaki and Lakshmana beside him, crowned with matted hair
The hymn does not open with a request. It first asks for a picture. Rama's skin is the deep, dark blue of a lotus that grows in still water. His eyes are long and shaped like lotus petals. Sita stands with him, named Janaki after her father, King Janaka, and so does his brother Lakshmana. His crown is not gold. It is his own matted hair, piled high the way forest hermits wear it. The sentence stays open, so the picture is carried forward.
Someone sits down to write a letter to a person far away. Before the first line, they prop a photograph against the lamp and look at it for a while. Then they write. The prayers of protection that come later are spoken the same way, to a face already held in mind rather than to an empty room.
