The Unborn Takes Up Arms

Rama Raksha Stotram 3

Meaning · English

With sword, quiver, bow and arrow in his hands, the end of those who prowl by night; unborn and all-pervading, he appeared by his own play to protect the world.

The picture now gets weapons and a purpose. Rama holds a sword, a bow and arrows, with a quiver on his back. He is the one who ends the night-prowlers who trouble the world. Then the line turns. This armed prince is also unborn, and spread through everything. Nothing forced him to come. He appeared by his own play, as easily as someone doing what they enjoy. The reason given is plain: to protect the world.

A lifeguard sits high on a chair above a beach, whistle and float within reach. Nobody drags her there; she chose the seat. When a swimmer struggles, she goes in. Rama's bow and arrows are like that float: carried freely, held ready, and meant for the people in the water rather than for show.
