Protection Begins at the Head
Rama Raksha Stotram 4
Meaning · English
Let the wise recite this shield of Rama, which removes wrongdoing and grants every wish. May Raghava guard my head; may Dasharatha's son guard my brow.
The first half names what the hymn is and what it brings. It is a shield made of words, meant for anyone with sense to recite. The hymn itself says it wipes away wrongdoing and grants whatever is wished for. The second half starts the shield. Two names of Rama are set on two parts of the body. Raghava, the one from Raghu's line, guards the head, and Dasharatha's son guards the forehead. Both names point to the royal family he was born into.
Think of a parent buttoning a child's winter coat before the walk to school, starting at the collar and working down, one button at a time. The prayer dresses the one who recites it the same way: a name fastened at the head, another at the brow, each one closing a gap.
