Guarding Eyes, Ears, Nose, Mouth
Rama Raksha Stotram 5
Meaning · English
May Kausalya's son guard my eyes, and the one Vishvamitra loves, my ears. May the guardian of the sacrifice guard my nose, and Lakshmana's loving brother, my mouth.
The hymn moves down the face, and each sense is given a different name of Rama. The eyes go to Kausalya's son, Rama as his mother's child. The ears go to the one dear to Vishvamitra, the sage. The nose goes to the one who kept a sacrifice safe. The mouth goes to the one who loves Saumitri, Sumitra's son Lakshmana. Each name points to a relationship or a deed, so the one being asked for protection is always someone known.
Picture someone locking up a house at night, going window by window: the front window, the kitchen window, the small one over the sink. Nothing gets waved off as just 'the windows'. The face is treated the same way. Eyes, ears, nose and mouth are its openings, and each one is named and given its own keeper.
