From Hands to Navel

Rama Raksha Stotram 7

Meaning · English

May the husband of Sita guard my hands, the victor over Jamadagni's son my heart; may the destroyer of Khara guard my waist, and Jambavan's refuge my navel.

Each body part is matched with a name of Rama, and each name points to a moment in his life. The hands go to Sita's husband. The heart goes to the one who overcame Jamadagni's son, the warrior-sage Parashurama. The waist, the body's middle, goes to the one who brought down the demon Khara. The navel goes to the one Jambavan, the old bear-king, relied on as his refuge. The prayer asks each of these, in turn, to keep that place safe.

Think of a building's night watch, where each floor has its own guard with a name badge pinned to his chest. No floor is left empty, and anyone can say who stands where. The hymn posts Rama the same way at hands, heart, waist and navel, each time under a different name.
