Goodwill at Dusk and Dawn

Atharva Veda 3.30.7

Meaning · English

I make you all turned one way, of one mind and one aim, by this bond. Like gods guarding the deathless drink, evening and morning, may goodwill be yours.

The seer speaks as the one who joins: I make you. Turned one way means facing the same direction, not pulling apart. One aim is read by older commentators as following one leader. Others take it as a single shared purpose. The bond is the blessing itself, the act of drawing hearts together. Then comes the picture of the gods keeping the nectar of immortality. They guard it with care and do not leave it untended. Goodwill in the family is held the same way, renewed each evening and each morning.

A pot of basil sits on a kitchen windowsill. Nobody waters it once and walks away. Someone checks the soil in the morning and again at night, and it stays green because of that steady return. Goodwill in a household lives the same way. It is tended at both ends of the day, not won once.
