Spokes Around the Fire

Atharva Veda 3.30.6

Meaning · English

One be your watering place, shared your portion of food; in one harness I bind you together. United, honour Agni, as spokes stand all around the hub.

The family drinks from one source and eats from one share. No one keeps a separate store. The seer then binds them in one harness, as oxen are bound to pull a single load, so the work of the house is drawn together. Agni, the sacred fire kept burning in the home, stands at the centre, and the household serves it side by side. Shared water, shared food and shared effort all lead back to one hearth.

Look at a bicycle wheel. Thin spokes come in from different points on the rim, yet every one is fixed into the same hub. Pull one loose and the wheel wobbles. Each spoke is one member of the family, starting from a different place. The hub is the shared fire. The wheel holds only because they all meet there.
