Sharing the Yoke

Atharva Veda 3.30.5

Meaning · English

Honouring elders, thoughtful, do not drift apart. Achieving together, sharing one yoke, come speaking kindly to one another. I make you united, of like mind.

The family is told not to drift apart, and given what keeps it together. They have elders, and keep them at the head; many read this as accepting the eldest's lead. They are thoughtful, acting with intention rather than impulse. They bring tasks to completion together and move as if bearing a single yoke. They speak to one another with kindness as they come and go. Then the seer speaks for himself: he makes them face the same way and think alike.

Two people carry a heavy cupboard up a narrow staircase. The one at the top, who can see the landing, calls each turn; the other answers, and both keep their voices even. If either lets go, the whole weight drops onto the other. The household's load moves the same way: heeding whoever sees ahead, talking gently, neither letting go.
