The Accord of the Gods

Atharva Veda 3.30.4

Meaning · English

That by which the gods do not drift apart and do not hate one another, that prayer we make in your home: accord among its people.

The gods are many, yet they do not split off from one another or turn hostile. Whatever holds them together, the seer now makes and sets down in a human house. The word for what he makes is a sacred utterance; some readers take it as prayer, others as a binding charm. What it produces is accord, literally a knowing-together: people seeing a matter the same way. It is asked for everyone who lives in the house, not for one side of a quarrel.

A dressmaker lays a paper pattern, already proven on one garment, over a new length of cloth and cuts around its edges. Nothing about the shape is invented again; it is carried over whole. The seer does the same with the household: the agreement that keeps the gods together is laid over the family, and they are cut to it.
