No Hatred Between Siblings

Atharva Veda 3.30.3

Meaning · English

Let no brother hate his brother, nor sister her sister. Moving together, keeping one vow, speak your words with goodwill.

The prayer names the bond where rivalry most easily grows: brother with brother, sister with sister. These are people who share parents, a house and an inheritance. The answer offered is not silence but a common direction. "Moving together" pictures people going the same way. "Keeping one vow" means holding to the same rule of life. From that shared ground, speech changes. It becomes kindly and well-meant, words that bring good instead of wounding.

Two people carry a heavy table down a narrow staircase. If each pulls his own way, it wedges against the wall and the arguing starts. Once they agree which end goes first, they move in step, and their calls to each other turn short and helpful. The shared direction comes first. The kind speech follows from it.
