Sweet Words at Home
Atharva Veda 3.30.2
Meaning · English
Let the son follow his father's course and be of one mind with his mother. Let the wife speak to her husband words sweet as honey, words of peace.
The household is named person by person. The son is to keep step with his father. The word means one who follows the same vow, sharing the course his father keeps. With his mother he is to share a mind, thinking with her rather than against her. The wife's part is speech. Her words to her husband are to be honeyed, pleasant to take in, and peaceable, the kind that calm rather than stir. Unity is asked for in conduct, in thought and in the voice.
A child walking beside a parent on a pavement soon matches their stride. The short steps lengthen without anyone saying so, and nobody is pulling. That is the son's following: keeping pace with the father's way by choice, so the two move as one walk rather than one dragging the other.
