One Heart, One Mind
Atharva Veda 3.30.1
Meaning · English
I make you one in heart, one in mind, without ill will. Delight in one another as the cow delights in her newborn calf.
The seer speaks as one who brings something about: I make you of one heart, of one mind, without hatred. Three conditions are named. The first is shared feeling, the second is shared thought, and the third is the absence of ill will between people who live under one roof. Then he hands the task to the family itself. He asks each member to reach toward the others with the eager warmth a cow shows her calf the moment it is born. The word for the cow means the one who is never to be struck.
Picture a rope at a village well, three strands twisted tight. Pull on one strand alone and it frays and snaps. Braided together, the strands lift a full bucket. Heart, mind and the absence of ill will are those three strands. Twisted into one, they bear the daily weight a household draws up together.
