Blocked sense, empty open

Meaning · English
When any one sense is checked and stopped, or its working is struck down, a person enters the single, void space. There, in that very place, the self shines out.
Three words carry it. Indriya is a sense: eye, ear, skin, tongue, nose, and the one that sorts them. Shunya is empty, a space with nothing set in it. Advaya means not two: no seer standing apart from a thing seen. The verse says any sense at all will do. Its working is stopped, either by blocking it or by a blow, and nothing is left for the mind to lean on. A person then enters. The void they enter is one, not two. In that place the self shines out. Nothing is added to produce it. It was there, and the stopped sense lets it show. That is why it works as a doorway. Bhairava's answer to how his nature is reached is the ordinary moment opened from inside: every sense already has its cut-off point, a flinch, a silence, a closing. At that edge the usual object drops, and what was knowing it remains. The verse names no particular sense and no required tool. Any one is enough. No commentary reading is given here.
1. Sit still and pick one sense, the eyes or the ears. 2. Let that sense stop working: close the eyes, or settle into a quiet room. Do not strain. 3. Notice the moment the usual object falls away. Stay at that edge. 4. When the mind reaches for a new object, let it go and return to the gap. 5. Rest in the open space, without looking for anything in it. 6. Stop when the attention tires, and open the sense slowly.
The tradition's account: the mind moves by way of the senses. When one sense is stopped, its movement halts, the support the mind was resting on drops away, and awareness is left knowing itself. The text calls this the self shining, not something made. What a sitter tends to notice is plainer. The first try often feels like loss, a dullness or a blank, and attention hunts for another object to grab. Closing the eyes or sitting in a very quiet room, the mind fills the gap with sound, thought, or body sensation. A small sign it is working is a brief gap where nothing is being grabbed, yet you are plainly still present. The usual ways it goes wrong: forcing the stop with tension in the face and jaw, mistaking sleepiness for emptiness, or watching for the self as if it were a new object.
