Seat Without Support
Vijnana Bhairava 82
Meaning · English
Sitting on a seat or lying down, picture your own body as resting on nothing. When the mind has thinned out, in a moment the pull of old habits and wishes is gone.
Three words carry it. Nirādhāra means without a base, nothing underneath. Vibhāvayan means bringing something clearly into the mind, holding a picture steadily until it is felt. Āśaya means what the mind lies down in: the stored leanings, wishes and habits that settle in it like sediment. The verse says: you may be sitting or lying down, in an ordinary position. Then you imagine your own body with no support under it. The body you lean on, the one you take for solid, is pictured as resting on nothing. As you hold this, the mind grows thin, kṣiṇa, worn down because it has nothing to grip. When that happens, the leanings that fill it lose their hold, and this can happen in a moment. The doorway works by the text's own logic: the mind runs on having something to stand on. Take away the ground in the one place it always assumes it, the body, and the running slows. Nothing special is needed. The seat or the bed you already have is where the opening happens. Shivopadhyaya's commentary is not quoted here, so no particular reading of his is claimed.
1. Sit on your usual seat, or lie down. Let the body be easy. 2. Picture your body resting on nothing, with no seat, floor or bed beneath it. 3. Hold that picture gently. Do not push it. 4. When the weight of the seat comes back or thoughts take over, return to the picture of no support. 5. Stay until the mind feels thin and quiet, then let the picture go and sit a moment longer.
The tradition's account: the mind moves by resting on a support, and the body is its first and most constant one. Picture the body as based on nothing and the support drops away. The mind's movement settles, and what is left is awareness knowing itself, with the old leanings no longer pushing it about. What a sitter tends to notice: at first the picture keeps collapsing. The weight of the seat, the pressure of the thighs, the floor sneak back in, and the mind snaps to thoughts. Often the body feels lighter, or its edges less certain, and the thinking goes quieter for a short while. Small signs it is working are a loosened jaw, softer shoulders, a gap between thoughts. The usual mistakes are forcing the picture hard, which tightens the head, or drifting into a daydream about floating. The attention wants to be steady, not busy. Some people grow uneasy at the missing ground and open their eyes. That is common.
