Silent Ha, Open Mouth

Vijnana Bhairava 81

Meaning · English

With the mouth open wide, place awareness in the middle of the tongue, in the middle. Then, making the sound ha in the mind alone, you dissolve into the stillness that follows.

Three words carry the verse. Madhya means middle, the centre between two sides, and it appears twice: the middle of the tongue, and awareness set in the middle. Cetana is awareness, the part of you that knows, not a thing it knows. Uccara is the rising of a sound, and ha is the syllable that rises. Here it is made manasa, by mind alone, with no voice. Now the clauses in order. The mouth is opened wide, so the jaw and lips let go of their usual hold. Awareness is put down in the middle of the tongue, a place you can feel but seldom notice. Then, from that spot, the sound ha is made inwardly, a sound with no lips or throat behind it. After it, there is stillness, and you dissolve into that stillness. Nothing is added to make it happen. It works as a doorway because it uses what is already there. An open mouth and a tongue are always present, and the ha is a sound the mind can make without effort. Ordinary attention is opened from inside: you rest on one quiet point, a sound rises and ends, and the stillness after it is the entrance.

1. Sit comfortably with your back upright. Open your mouth wide, without strain, and let the jaw hang loose. 2. Feel the middle of your tongue. Rest your awareness there and leave the tongue still. 3. From that spot, make the sound ha in the mind only. Keep the throat and lips quiet. 4. Let the sound end, and stay in the stillness after it. Do not add another ha until the quiet has ended by itself. 5. When the mind wanders, come back to the middle of the tongue and begin again with one ha. 6. Stop when the jaw tires or the sit is done. Close the mouth and rest a moment.

The tradition's account: the mind's usual movement is held on a single point, the middle of the tongue, so it stops running outward. The silent ha rises and then ends. What it leaves is a quiet with no support, no object and no one pushing. Awareness, no longer carried by anything, is left knowing itself, and that is what the text calls dissolving. What a sitter tends to notice is plainer. An open mouth feels odd at first. The jaw wants to close, the tongue wants to move, and saliva may gather. The tongue's middle is hard to find until you stop searching and just feel the surface of it. The inner ha is easily turned into a faint whisper or a small push in the throat. When that happens the sound is too heavy. The sign that it is working is small: after the ha there is a gap, and the attention sits in it for a moment without reaching for the next thought. The usual ways it goes wrong are straining for the gap, repeating ha too fast so there is no pause, and losing the tongue altogether.
