Space Under the Arms

Meaning · English

Settle on a seat and bend both arms halfway, held well away from the body. Rest the mind in the open hollow beneath the arms. As it dissolves into that space, calm comes.

Three words carry it. Kakshavyoman joins kaksha, the armpit, with vyoman, open space: the empty hollow where the arm meets the chest. Manas is the mind, the part that keeps moving from one thing to the next. Laya is melting or dissolving, and shama is calm, a stilling. Now the clauses in order. You sit on a seat. You bend both arms halfway, not folded tight and not straight, and you hold them clear of the body so a hollow opens under each. You put the mind in that space. Calm comes from the mind dissolving there. The doorway works by the text's own logic: the ordinary sitting body already holds an opening, and nothing has to be added to it. The mind usually moves because it grabs at objects. Here it is given an emptiness with nothing to grab, so its restlessness has nothing to feed on. Bhairava's answer to the question of how his nature is reached is an everyday posture opened from inside.

1. Sit on a seat with your back upright and your weight even. 2. Bend both arms halfway and lift them slightly away from your ribs, so a hollow opens under each arm. 3. Rest your attention in that empty space under the arms, not on the skin or the muscle. 4. When the mind wanders or the arms ache, let the shoulders drop, bring your attention back to the space, and keep the bend loose. 5. Stay as the attention settles into the hollow, and stop when the arms can no longer be held easily.

The tradition's account: the mind moves only while it has something to lean on. Set it in empty space and the support drops away, the movement stops, and awareness is left knowing itself. That is the text's teaching, given as the reason calm follows. What a sitter tends to notice: with the arms half bent and lifted, the elbows rise a little, the shoulders loosen, and the sides of the chest lengthen. The spine stays upright on the seat, and the breath is left alone. Early on the arms tire and the shoulders creep upward. Attention slides to the skin or the muscle instead of the space between. Small signs it is working are a sense of width under the arms, a quieter breath, and thoughts that feel thinner. The usual errors are holding the arms stiffly, straining to feel something, and building a picture of the space instead of resting in it.
